The Dos and Don’ts of Child Custody

Raising a child after a divorce does not come without its challenges. However, co-parents can best meet their children’s needs by taking certain actions and avoiding others. Continue reading and reach out to our Montgomery County child custody lawyer to learn more about the dos and don’ts of child custody.

Negative Behavior

As a co-parent, there are several actions and types of behavior you should avoid at all costs. Some of those are as follows:

  • Never talk badly about your ex to your child. In some ways, children see themselves as extensions of their parents, and trash-talking the other parent will only hurt them in the long run.
  • Never take any anger you have about your ex out on your child.
  • Never make your child choose sides when you and your spouse are in an argument.
  • Don’t use your children to get information about your ex.

Ultimately, you have to use your judgment. Think about how your actions and words will affect your child. Everything you say or do can have a lasting impact. Make sure it’s a positive one.

Positive Behavior

The good news is that there are a ton of actions you can take to enrich your child’s life even after a divorce. Some examples of positive behavior when it comes to raising children during and after a divorce are as follows:

  • Create a plan with your ex about how you can best serve your child’s needs and how you can both play a substantial role in your child’s life. You should also set certain “rules,” in terms of how you will parent your child. Consistency is key. For example, if one parent doesn’t allow their child to eat fast food, the other parent shouldn’t either.
  • Remain on speaking terms with your ex. You are co-parents, and a certain level of trust and open communication is necessary to best raise your child.
  • Create a plan for custody on holidays, vacations, and other events.
  • Though you should be open and honest with your child, you should use discretion with what you choose to talk about. For example, your child shouldn’t have to listen to you vent about your divorce, your emotional needs, and more. If you think you need help, consider speaking with a trusted friend or a therapist.
  • Overall, try to always put your child’s best interests first.
